Jones to perform at Cd'A High

Galen Jones, a bass-baritone singer, will present a senior recital on May 5 at 7 p.m. at the Coeur d’Alene High School Auditorium.

He was the 2016 Bass Division Winner of the Idaho Music Educators’ Association State Solo Contest held in Boise last spring.

As a 2017 graduating senior at Coeur d’Alene High, this recital is part of Jones’ senior project which will be completed in late May, at which time he will present his accompanying thesis to a panel of judges selected from the Coeur d’Alene community.

During his four years in high school, Jones has been a member of both the Concert Choir and the Chamber Choir, and he was invited to conduct a song at a school performance.

Jones was also one of the youngest members of the Northwest Sacred Music Chorale, singing with that group for two years. At Coeur d’Alene High, he recently was awarded a Renaissance Medal for a GPA 3.55 to 3.99.

Since 2011, he has studied voice with Gaynell Coppess, retired assistant conductor of the Northwest Sacred Music Chorale.

He will pursue further voice and musical study at the University of Idaho’s Lionel Hampton School of Music beginning this fall.

Jones would eventually like a career as a university music professor and performer.

Assisting Jones during the May 5 recital will be pianist, Cynthia Marlette; soprano, Tyler Heick; and KPBX announcer, Tom Bacon, who will narrate the background and story lines of Jones’ vocal selections. The recital will include art songs sung in Italian, French, German and English, as well as an aria from Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief, and the famous “Non piu andrai” from Le Nozze di Figaro.

The program will conclude with songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” and the popular “Les Miserables.”

The event is free and open to the public.
