COEUR d’ALENE — With little discussion Monday, a First District judge refused to release a Nine Mile Falls, Wash., woman, or to set a bond for the 29-year-old who failed earlier to appear at her preliminary hearing.

District Judge Rich Christensen refused to set bail for Aleksandra A. Bukovskaya and would not release her from jail despite an assurance by defense attorney Jeanne Howe that Bukovskaya had a place to stay and the support of family members in the area.

Bukovskaya was charged with four felonies and five misdemeanors in April after deputies allegedly found drugs and burglary tools, including window punches and numerous keys for other vehicles, in the stolen car Bukovskaya parked behind the Post Falls Flying J. She pleaded guilty last week to two of the felonies including theft of a car and being in possession of stolen property.

“The presumption of innocence is no longer present in this matter,” Christensen said.

Howe asked if the court would consider a $10,000 bond.

“No,” Christensen replied.

Bukovskaya was initially charged with grand theft, having a stolen credit card, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, and possession of methamphetamine, marijuana, prescription drugs and paraphernalia, according to deputies.

Many of the stolen items were linked to vehicle thefts in Spokane, Spokane Valley, Deer Park and Coeur d’Alene, according to deputies.

Deputy prosecutor Barry Black said the defendant had seven similar felony convictions harkening back to 2007, including a recent 2011 conviction.

Bukovskaya had posted more than $22,000 bail in May, which was forfeited when she failed to appear for her June preliminary hearing. She was arrested a week later and has been in jail since June 9. Sentencing is set Aug. 12 in Coeur d’Alene.
