SANDPOINT — A fundraising campaign has been established to aid the family that lost one child in a drowning that also seriously injured a second child.

The gofundme.com account has been established in the name of the Grasser boys (gofundme.com/grasserboys).

Isaac Grasser, 17, and Michael Grasser, 10, were swimming with their mother at Morton Slough on Tuesday.

Bonner County Sheriff’s officials said both boys were inexperienced swimmers who started off wearing life jackets, but took them off believing the slough off the Pend Oreille River was shallow. They were also unaware of currents where they were swimming, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The teen began having difficulty staying afloat and starting to panic, prompting his mother to try and rescue him.

“He was so panicked that he was taking them both down. She was able to swim to shore for help,” the gofundme post said.

Michael Grasser, meanwhile, jumped in to try and save them, but ended up drowning.

Isaac Grasser was flown from the scene and remains on life support, according to the gofundme post.

The family released the following statement on Thursday, which was published by Spokane television station KHQ:

“We are in an unimaginable amount of grief with the loss of our youngest son and brother, Michael, and we are praying intently for our older son and only brother left, Isaac, for God’s will and strength in this situation.

“We are hurting but our faith in God is carrying us through this time. We appreciate the massive amounts of love and support we have been shown constantly every hour.”
