Get ready to shake, rattle and roll with Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre.

Elvis Presley. Johnny Cash. Jerry Lee Lewis. Carl Perkins.

These four icons came together on Dec. 4, 1956, at Sun Records, the Memphis studios of legendary producer Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” for an historic jam session.

That event is captured by Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre’s upcoming production, the Tony Award-winning musical “Million Dollar Quartet.”

The show features a score of rock hits: “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “That’s All Right,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Walk the Line,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Hound Dog,” and many more.

Matt Wolfe, director of Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre’s production, said the show takes the audience into a time machine to meet the legends of rock ’n’ roll and Phillips, the man who discovered them.

“His (Phillips) is a classic American story that reminds us of two timeless truths: one person can make a difference and every voice matters. From a tiny recording studio, Sam managed to change the world by giving four extraordinary country boys a chance to be heard,” Wolfe said.

Audiences loved the show so much at its Seattle premiere at Village Theatre 10 years ago, many of them came back several times to see it again, Wolfe said. It’s gone on to Broadway, London, Las Vegas, and venues around the world for a reason, he said.

“It’s a rock ’n’ roll extravaganza wrapped around the story of the ‘first family’ of rock ’n’ roll at Sun Records. It has a tremendous amount of heart and invites the audience into a little-known but transformative moment in American history,” Wolfe said. “‘Million Dollar Quartet’ burns away all of the cliches and misconceptions about who Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins really were. It reveals their origins to us and gets back to the original magic of the early days of rock ’n’ roll. By the time it’s over, everyone in the room will understand why, once it arrived, rock ’n’ roll was here to stay.”

The show runs Aug. 10 to 27 at the Salvation Army Kroc Center Theater, 1765 W. Golf Course Road, Coeur d’Alene.
