MOSCOW — Idaho football wrapped up its final day in shells on Friday, with the regular season now less than four weeks away.

One group that is looking to impress in 2017 is the receiving corps. The Vandals lost a number of quality receivers to graduation, but still field a unit that includes four athletes that appeared in at least 10 games a season ago.

“Jacob Sannon has had an unbelievable fall camp so far,” said head coach Paul Petrino. “He had a great spring. I think Alfonso Onunwor is doing some great things. I think Ruben Mwuehla has probably had the best practices he has had since he’s been here over the last two days.

“I think Dave Ungerer and Mason Petrino will do a lot of good things too. We got some good young guys Michael Garner has been here, he’s been doing good. Then we got JJ [Willis] and DJ [Lee] and they are both good players. And Brandon Luckett can fly. We got a lot of good guys. We just need to continue to improve and get better.”

Alfonso Onunwor is Idaho’s top returning receiver, after catching 39 balls for 403 yards and a score in 2016. Not far behind is Jacob Sannon, who finished the year with 28 receptions for 303 yards and two touchdowns. Also in the mix are a pair of local guys, in David Ungerer and Mason Petrino.

“Receivers are looking real good,” said Ungerer. “We started off a little rusty, but we had a really good day today. A bunch of guys made some tough plays and plays down the field.”

Mason Petrino served primarily as a backup quarterback as a true freshman, but worked his way into the receiving group during the spring.

“It’s going great, I’m working with a great group of guys. You couldn’t ask for a better group of guys,” Mason Petrino said. “We have great leadership, all the guys are really close. We just try to come out here and grind away each day and try to get better.”

The Vandals will put the full pads on for today’s practice before taking Sunday off.
