Aug. 8, 1967 — REPORTS ON RIOTS

J.C. Benoit, chairman of the local Salvation Army service extension committee, received word that Salvation Army canteens and trucks were deployed in the Detroit riot areas to assist military and law forces in restoring order by providing food and supplies for those caught in the riots.

Salvation Army men’s store in the Detroit area was badly damaged and looted by rioters.

KIWANIS PICNIC MONDAY NIGHT

Sandpoint Kiwanis Club members will forsake their regular Monday noon meeting on Aug. 7 for a family picnic at 6:30 p.m. at Camp Stidwell on Mirror lake. Richard Neuder is in charge of the games for youngsters. Several events are planned for the children plus some horseshoe pitching for the older individuals.

MRS. WAYNE WALKER VISITS BOOK HOME

Mrs. Wayne Walker (Arlene Book) and children, Steve, Kathy and Doug, and Mike Kelly, of Detroit, Mich., are visiting Mrs. Walker’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loren Book. They will visit here until Aug. 17.

Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. James Ketchum of Priest River were dinner guests at the Book home to visit Mrs. Walker and family. Mrs. Ketchum is Mrs. Book’s sister.

About 16 went up Baldy to pick huckleberries Monday and expect to return Wednesday.

Mrs. Helmer Sletager went to Spokane to join the navy.

RED CROSS WEEKLY NOTES

A large supply of jellies, jams and pickles was taken to the boys of Company H last Friday. Those who gave these articles would have felt well paid if they could have seen the “war dance” executed by the boys at the prospect of such dainties.

As soon as Chautauqua is over it is expected that Red Cross headquarters will be a much busier place.

Dover reports the following work finished: Three pairs of pajamas, two convalescent robes, two dozen handkerchiefs, sixteen pairs of bed socks, five pairs of slippers, and three bed shirts.

Secretary’s report of Sandpoint chapter of the America Red Cross from July 13 to August 1 shows total membership of 681.

SILOS — A GOOD INVESTMENT

Silos are needed throughout the country. Next to the importance placed subscribing to the Liberty Loan, the National City Bank of New York states “There ought to be a million silos built and filled this year before the growing season is over. They will not only help win the war, but to make living cheaper after the war.”
