SANDPOINT — After remaining on life support for three days following a tragic accident last Tuesday, 17-year-old Isaac Grasser died Friday in the hospital with his family by his side, according to the Grasser family's GoFundMe page.

His little brother, 11-year-old Michael Grasser, died at the scene after trying to help his older brother who began having a difficult time swimming due to the current of the river in Morton Slough.

According to the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, the boys and their mother were swimming near the boat launch when the mother realized she could not find either child. In a press release, BCSO officials said the boys were inexperienced swimmers who started out wearing life vests, but took them off believing the water was shallow and were unaware of the current in the river.

Isaac Grasser began to experience difficulties staying afloat, and started to panic. His mother jumped in the water, but began to be taken under by her son’s struggles and swam to shore to summon help.

"He was so panicked, that he was taking them both down," the GoFundMe page said. "She was able to swim to shore for help. Michael jumped in to try to and save them."

Citizens who were in the area heard the mother’s cries for help and were able to locate the 17-year-old, bring him to shore, and immediately began CPR. They were unable to locate Michael Grasser at that time, BCSO officials said.

Deputies took over CPR, and eventually Bonner County EMS and Selkirk Fire personnel arrived and took over life-saving measures.

While the life-saving measures were being performed on the teen, members of the Bonner County Dive Team located Michael Grasser in about 6 to 7 feet of water. The youth was not breathing and life-saving measures were immediately started. Life Flight was launched and on scene quickly. After regaining a pulse, Isaac Grasser was flown to Kootenai Health where he remained on life support until Friday.
