PASS students celebrate the end of summer

Among all the things to do, one of the most popular activities was running the siren on the police car.
Kids explore the cab of a Zanetti work truck. They also couldn’t pass up the opportunity to honk the truck horn.
Who says learning can’t be fun?
Because Silver Valley students with Pinehurst Elementary’s PASS (Pinehurst After School Science) program may disagree after the fun morning they just had.
Over 60 kids showed up to the Pinehurst/Kingston Library Tuesday morning to check out some of our area’s coolest “gettin’ stuff done” vehicles and learn from the men and women who operate them.
A fire engine, school bus, police car, U-haul truck, work truck, and two Avista power line repair trucks were on hand for the kids to explore (and sometimes climb on) during this end-of-summer party.
As each group of kids moved from rig to rig, the individuals who drove the vehicles there talked to them about their jobs and showed them the gear they use.
Firefighter Joe Andersen with Shoshone County Fire District No. 2 taught the kids about the fire engine he drove to the event and let them try on firefighter bunker gear so they could get a sense of how much it weighs.
Also, what fire engine display would be complete without letting kids shoot a fire hose?
Tonia Brown, Pinehurst’s Shoshone County Sheriff’s Deputy, also joined in on the fun and let kids check out her patrol car by running the siren and letting them sit in the back.
The kids also had fun looking at the equipment and wearing the plastic hard hats that Avista brought.
Throw in a little horse play in a U-Haul truck and some loud honks from the Zanetti work truck, and you have yourself a fun morning.
Kayla Ross-Marang, a PASS leader/ teacher, thought the event was great for the kids and that they had a lot of fun.
Anna Inboden, event organizer and Pinehurst librarian, echoed Ross-Marang’s thoughts and was very happy that the kids had this opportunity to look at some really cool stuff.
