A 33-year-old Coeur d’Alene man who allegedly head-butted a deputy and punched his girlfriend, blackening her eyes, during a ruckus Sunday at a waterfront restaurant, is in the Kootenai County jail on $65,000 bond.
Kanon M. Charbonneau is charged with five felonies including assaulting a police officer, domestic battery, attempted strangulation, second-degree kidnapping and grand theft. He is also charged with three misdemeanors including DUI, malicious injury to property, and destruction of a telecommunications device.
Charbonneau, through a public defender Monday in First District Court, pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanors. A preliminary hearing will be scheduled within two weeks.
Prosecutors said Charbonneau and his live-in girlfriend were involved in a domestic dispute around 4:30 p.m. outside the Cedars Floating Restaurant where Charbonneau allegedly punched the 37-year-old victim with a closed fist several times. Onlookers who attempted to break up the altercation were unable to stop the beating. By the time deputies arrived, the alleged victim’s eyes were already blackened and her face was bruised.
Charbonneau allegedly dragged the victim into his 2007 Lincoln Mark VII pickup truck and attempted to flee the scene, but Deputy Cody Ragan stopped the vehicle and another altercation ensued when Charbonneau allegedly head-butted Ragan, and the two men went to the ground.
The victim jumped from the pickup grabbed a baton from the deputy’s patrol car and began beating Charbonneau with the night stick, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
“Due to her help, the deputy was able to gain control of Charbonneau and take him into custody,” Detective Dennis Stinebaugh said in a press release.
“Charbonneau had punched the victim in the face, attempted to strangle her, destroyed her personal property, and forced her into his vehicle against her will,” according to the press release.
Charbonneau is also charged with grand theft because he allegedly stole the woman’s financial transaction card, according to court records.
The victim and deputy were transported to Kootenai Health, where the deputy was treated and released. The victim’s status was not reported before press time.
Wearing yellow jail pajamas at his first court appearance, Charbonneau held his hands over his face as he listened to Magistrate James F. Combo read the charges. Combo ordered a no-contact order between the defendant and the victim.
Charbonneau asked if his family could retrieve his belongings from the Coeur d’Alene residence he shared with the victim. In the event he posts bond, Combo said, Charbonneau would have to retrieve his things himself, accompanied by police.
According to court records, the victim suffered black eyes and a broken nose. Charbonneau will not be able to plead to the felonies until arraignment, which is usually scheduled pending the result of the probable cause — or preliminary — hearing.
