The National Wilderness Stewardship Alliance recently granted Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness a little more than $6,000 to go toward a trail program for the 2017 summer stewardship season, a news release states. The new grant was one of 23 National Forest System Trail Stewardship Grants awarded nationwide

Under the program, Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness crews and Forest Service partners have worked each summer since 2010 to improve and maintain trails, a news release states.

“The Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness grant accounts for two of the states and two of the national forests, facilitating trail projects in the Kootenai National Forest of Montana and Panhandle National Forests in Idaho,” the news release continues. “Trails worked on include Scotchman Peak Trail #65, Morris Creek Trail #132 and Regal Creek Trail #556 on the Panhandle; and Star Peak Historic Trail #999, Napoleon Gulch Trail #1019, Hamilton Gulch Trail #1016 and the new Spar Lake Trail #143-A on the Kootenai.”

Sandy Compton, program coordinator for Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness, recently joined the National Wilderness Stewardship Alliance board, states the news release.
