SANDPOINT — A former Sandpoint man doing time in a California prison has been brought back to Bonner County to face child molestation charges, court records show.

Steve Ronald Ennis Jr. is charged with lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor, sexual abuse of a minor and bail jumping.

Ennis, 53, made an initial appearance in magistrate court on Wednesday via video feed from the Bonner County Jail. Judge Tera Harden set Ennis’ bail at $102,000 and appointed a public defender to represent him, according to court documents. An order was also entered which forbids Ennis from being in contact with the alleged victim or her family.

Ennis is accused of engaging in lewd conduct with the girl from 2014 to March 2015, when she was between the ages of 11 and 12, a criminal complaint alleges. He’s further accused of touching the girl’s breasts during the same time frame and exposing her to pornographic videos.

Ennis failed to appear at a pretrial conference in a felony driving under the influence case in 2015, court records indicate.

The allegations against Ennis emerged in June, when the alleged victim told Sandpoint Police that Ennis needed to be held accountable for his actions and stopped from abusing others, according to a probable cause affidavit.

She told police investigators that Ennis sexually abused her on a daily basis when they lived here.

Ennis was being held at a state prison in Cocoran, Calif., when he was served with a warrant in the Idaho case. It was not immediately clear why Ennis was incarcerated.

A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Aug. 23.
