Don't be eclipsed by the fun, but view solar event safely
Bonner County Daily Bee | UPDATED 7 years, 5 months AGO
On Tuesday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. we had taken 75 calls at The Library from people looking for solar eclipse viewing glasses. We ran out of them on Monday, but we want to help all of you to have a safe, fun, and epic #SolarEclipse2017.
Over the past couple of months, we distributed 2,000 glasses and hosted three educational programs featuring presentations by astronomers from the Spokane Astronomical Society. Our witty and talented blogger, Brenden Bobby, published an awesome blog post on our website with his usual scienti-funny writing style. We also published a couple of newspaper articles.
Do you have plans to view the eclipse on Monday, Aug. 21? Plan for a black-out at about 10:15 a.m. that will last around 15 minutes.
We will not see totality here in Bonner County; only about 88 percent of the sun will be eclipsed. Although that is enough to block out much of the sun, we are warned not to look directly at it without eclipse glasses. Think dry leaf and magnifying glass.
If you are unable to get glasses before the big day, do not despair. NASA suggests this and other handy alternatives on their website, eclipse2017.nasa.gov:
“Cross the outstretched, slightly open fingers of one hand over the outstretched, slightly open fingers of the other, creating a waffle pattern. With your back to the sun, look at your hands’ shadow on the ground.
“The little spaces between your fingers will project a grid of small images on the ground, showing the sun as a crescent during the partial phases of the eclipse.”
VisitIdaho.org also has some great resources for getting the most out of your eclipse viewing experience, from Idaho viewing schedules to tips for planning ahead. I was surprised to learn how the event may impact us here, even though we don’t expect the influx of tourist traffic anticipated by those in Eastern Idaho where the path of totality passes through.
There are a couple of eclipse viewing events happening in our area, such as the Schweitzer Mountain event and the Lake Pend Oreille Cruise. Wherever you decide to view the eclipse, please ensure that you and yours stay safe by being informed.
