SANDPOINT — A public open house is scheduled for Sunday as the city wraps up construction on War Memorial Field and the newly constructed Barlow Stadium.
"While the public was able to take advantage of the new stadium seating during the Festival at Sandpoint, this will be the first time the public gets to see the locker rooms and other areas underneath the seating in the new stadium," said City Administrator Jennifer Stapleton in a statement Friday.
The home and visitor locker rooms in the 10,800-square-foot facility are 1,170 square feet each. Each locker room is lined with 70 lockers in red and black, as well as restrooms and 15 showers. Also underneath the grandstands, the referees have their own locker room with five lockers, a shower and restroom. The other doors lining the wall along the back of the grandstands lead to men and women's public restrooms and a shop area for use by Parks and Recreation staff.
The improvements that can be seen include the seating area of the stadium, which now holds 1,500 people. The new gateway stands tall with three, 20-foot tall brick pillars and 9-foot gates. Across the three pillars, a sign lets patrons know they have arrived at War Memorial Field — Barlow Stadium. A new ticket booth is on the west side of the gateway.
Located just inside the park, to either side of the gateway, the Friends of Memorial Field donated seating walls through a fundraising effort where community members donated $250 to "buy a brick." Those individuals names are listed on the seating walls. The Friends also donated a new scoreboard, which will be in Bulldog colors, and should arrive soon.
Construction of the new stadium started last September and final touches will be completed next month. Discussion on turf replacement options will also begin this September. Under consideration is natural turf, artificial turf and a hybrid option. Construction of Barlow Stadium, the gateway and turf is supported by a local option sales tax approved by city residents in November, 2015. It is a five-year tax that will sunset Dec. 31, 2020.
The public open house is scheduled at Memorial Field from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.
