COEUR d’ALENE — The ladies of the 3Cs have outdone themselves again.

They beat last year's record of $102,165 by more than $11,000 when they distributed a generous $113,550 to 27 local nonprofits Friday during the annual Appreciation Lunch in The Coeur d'Alene Resort.

"This will go many, many miles to help families," said recipient Polly Schindler, founder of the Anna Schindler Foundation, which supports Inland Northwest families fighting childhood cancer.

"When families get diagnosed, usually one parent has to quit work, so income drops,” she said. "We try to fill that gap for utility bills, you name it, any living costs they would have."

She said funds provided by the 3Cs (Cancer and Community Charities) allow her foundation to "swoop in" when families need them.

"It allows us to accomplish our mission," Schindler said. "They're just generous ladies. It's a beautiful blessing, and nobody can understand how hard it is to raise money. That they're using their goodness to give to others is awesome."

About 170 guests attended the luncheon, which included a light lunch, social time and the hauntingly beautiful viola and violin playing of Harmony Ranch founder Diana Clemons. Honored guests Kootenai County Sheriff Maj. Kim Edmondson, Coeur d'Alene Police Chief Lee White and Post Falls Police Chief Scot Haug distributed the checks and congratulated recipients when they were called to the stage.

"I'm very proud the 3Cs can do this sort of thing," said 3Cs President Barbara Newland. "We have such hard-working women that make this come true every year."

The funds will stay in Kootenai County to assist a variety of causes. This amount brings the 3Cs giveaway total to well more than $2 million since the charitable organization was founded in 1962.

The 3Cs hosts two annual fundraising events, a spring fashion show and a fall festival, and its 12 activity groups keep the ladies busy raising funds throughout the year.
