RATHDRUM — In the Lake City Timberwolves’ first game of 2017, coach Alan Rich said they were looking to put the right guys in the right positions.

Consider Greyden Lee in the right place at the right time.

Lee scored the game-winner in the 75th minute as the Timberwolves clipped the Lakeland Hawks 4-3 in a nonleague match at Sunrise Rotary Field.

“It was our first game, so we were still trying to find the right players for the proper positions,” Rich said. “We still have a ways to go, but had a lot of good combination play and worked well together. I was really pleased with some really extended minutes of solid play. We still have some things to work on, but they played really well as a team, and that’s what we like.”

Jorge Bonacho scored two goals for Lakeland (1-2), which hosts Coeur d’Alene on Wednesday.

“It was a back and fourth game,” Lakeland coach Jeremiah Beckett said. “Both teams put everything they had into it and it was a good match. We just ran out of time. I felt like we won the game and outplayed Lake City. It just didn’t show that way on the scoreboard.”

Lake City hosts Moscow on Tuesday.

First half — 1, LC, Greyden Lee (Caleb McLuskie), 2:00. 2, LL, Jorge Bonacho (Dylan Knight), 20:00. 3, LC, McLuskie (Carson Noordham), 24:00. 4, LL, Bonacho (unassisted), 38:00. COEUR d’ALENE — Gabe Nazemi scored two goals, and assisted on the other, as the Vikings beat the Bears in a nonleague match.

For Lake, it was the play of Drake Prohaska that stood out.

“Drake, he doesn’t show up on the stat sheet, but was really big for us today,” Lake said. “He created a play on two of those goals. We had a lot of chances, and from our perspective, we need to be more clinical in front of the net.”

Coeur d’Alene (1-1) lost 1-0 in its season opener last Wednesday to Sandpoint at home.

“It was night and day between today and Wednesday,” Lake said. “It was definitely a rebound game after losing to Sandpoint. It was nice to see how they bounced back from the loss. All 11 guys today put in the effort, played physical and strong. To win 3-0 was a good result.”

Coeur d’Alene travels to Lakeland on Wednesday.

EAGLE — The combination of Tanner Kohal to Mac Stultz once again proved effective, as Stultz finished a pair of goals off assists from Kohal, leading the Bulldogs to a blanking of the Mustangs in nonleague play.

The two also combined for the lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Rocky Mountain on Friday, as the Bulldogs (3-0-1) are undefeated against the first four of five consecutive 5A opponents to start the season.

“The boys maintained focus and played extremely well,” said Bulldog head coach Evan McNeley, lauding the second of the two goals. “Tanner took a free kick from midfield, got it behind the defense and Mac volleyed it out of air into the corner. An absolutely beautiful goal.”

Julian Barajas kept a clean sheet for his second shutout of the season in goal.

Sandpoint hosts Post Falls on Tuesday.

LEWISTON — Eastern Washington University-bound junior Riley Walkington blasted two goals, each assisted by freshman Jordie Breeden, to lead the Bulldogs to a dispatching of the Bengals in nonleague girls soccer at Walker Field.

Emi Lynch and Yeo Yarnell each added goals, as the Bulldogs dominated the action and racked up a whopping 33 shots on goal in the win. Head coach Conor Baranski was pleased with his team’s play, especially since they were missing three starters.

“It’s always tough driving down to Lewiston and they’re a team that works really hard, so to have scored four is really promising. We were missing three senior starters, so I was interested to see how the team responded, and obviously they responded well,” he said, noting his target forward once again set the tone. “Riley was relentless in the first half, and simply wouldn’t give up until she scored a couple.”

Sandpoint (2-0-1) is at Post Falls on Tuesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Annica Wilson and Courtney Cydell had two goals each as the Timberwolves beat the Hawks at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“We put some kids in at different spots, and it was a good showing,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “We were looking for some players to step up on the front line, and they did that. It was the first time we had everyone on the back line, and they played well.”

Hines also had two assists, and Emma Bartlett had two goals and an assist for Coeur d’Alene Charter (2-0, 2-0 IML).

“On a hot afternoon like today, our game plan was to let the ball do most of the work by connecting passes,” Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “We were able to do it early in the game and maintain it through to the end of the match.”
