SILVERTON — Well that’s not a bad way to start of the season.

The Wallace High School Varsity Football team walked away with a home win 28-22 Friday night when they took on the Clark Fork Mountain Cats team comprised of players from Superior and Alberton, Montana.

The win was even more impressive with the fact that several Miners were suffering from the stomach flu or missed the game due to other circumstances.

Eric Brackebush, quarterback, threw for 112 yards and completed 12 of 19 attempted passes.

The bulk of the Wallace offense came from running backs, Jaden Dimitroff and Layton Gallagher, who ran for a combined 266 total yards and scored 2 touchdowns each (15 carries for 122 yards and 9 carries for 144 yards, respectively).

Aside from some early setbacks related to “penalties and mental mistakes,” Wallace Coach Jared Young said that the Wa-Hi defense held their own all night by forcing three turnovers- two fumbles and one interception.

Young was pleased with his team’s overall effort for the first game of the year.

“It was a great start for the Miners, considering the setbacks we had, I thought the kids stepped up and played a hard fought game,” he said.

“We made the plays we needed to secure a win.”

The Miners (1-0) will take on the Clearwater Valley Rams in the University of Idaho Kibbie Dome on Sept. 2 to open Whitepine League play (0-0).

Young is confident that the Miners know what they need to work on and prepare for in their next game after this first opportunity to learn a little more about themselves.

“We will be ready to start league play and the kids are excited to open that up in the Kibbie Dome Saturday.”
