Aug. 29, 1967 — YAGER TO TURKEY

A3C Robert D. Yager, son of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Yager, Sandpoint, will be assigned to an air base in Turkey for 18 months after completing Air Police security training at Lackland AFB Tex.

SCHOONOVER SIGNED AS ASST. COACH

Returning to his alma mater where he was an outstanding Bulldog fullback, Charles Schoonover fills the assistant coach spot at Sandpoint High vacated when Duane Ward, also an SHS alumnus, transferred to the junior high.

A 1952 SHS graduate, Schoonover was asst. football coach and 7th and 8th grade basketball coach at Orofino High the last four years. He is married to the former Nita Beauchamp of Sagle and the couple has two boys and a girl.

DRIVE TO BRING U of I TV TO AREA

The Sandpoint Lions club is spearheading a drive to finance a translator on Bald mountain to bring in educational television, Vandal football games and statewide newscasts from KUID-TV, the U of I television station. Initial tests show the signal from Moscow is well received on Bald mountain west of Sandpoint. From this elevation all parts of Bonner county can be covered. Cost of the project has been estimated at $3,000.

Aug. 29, 1917 — PICKS UP SLACKER

A hobo appeared at Deputy Sheriff Reem’s residence on Oak street Monday, begging for a hand-out. Reem’s mother had him exercise on the woodpile a few minutes and then gave him breakfast. Deputy Reem asked the fellow if he had his registration card. He claimed to be over age but the deputy sheriff did not believe him and took him off to jail. When arraigned before the U.S. Commissioner, the man said he did not register because of defective eyesight. He was bound over.

H COMPANY’S RETURN A SURPRISE

Tuesday H company arrived in the city from Boise over the railroad and are again encamped adjacent to the N.P. tracks. Their return was a complete surprise to Sandpoint people and almost as much to the members of the company.

Capt. Boles has no inside information as to the reason for their return. “It is evident, however,” he said, “the war department is concerned over labor troubles of the northwest, and placing forces at certain points will help in preventing trouble.”

SUCCEED WHIST WITH KNITTING

At a Red Cross meeting, Mrs. L.D. Farmin said she had seen an account stating a million five hundred knitted sets are needed in Europe. She suggested Sandpoint ladies knit instead of playing whist this winter and that the men gathering with the women talk on current topics while the women ply their needles.
