Lake City opens with convincing win

COEUR d’ALENE — The Lewiston Bengals eliminated the Lake City Timberwolves at the state 5A volleyball tournament last season.

On Tuesday night, the Timberwolves showed how much they remembered.

Lake City rode a balanced attack to a 25-19, 25-14, 25-14 victory over Lewiston in the T-Wolves’ season opener, also the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both.

“We were kind of nervous and tight,” said Mike Summers, making his debut as Lake City coach. “Then we finally got to playing our style in the second and third set.”

Klaire Mitchell had 25 assists, six kills, 12 digs and four aces for Lake City. Arlaina Stephenson added seven kills and four aces, Ashley Kaufman six kills, Claire Heberer four blocks, Kaitlin Hunter three blocks, Reilley Chapman 11 digs, Chloe Knudson four aces.

“I felt the girls controlled the match from the start,” said Summers, praising defensive specialists Chapman, Knudson and Ashley Reyes, “and did a real good job rebounding and fixing mistakes as we played.”

Lake City returns to action next Tuesday at Sandpoint.

Coeur d’Alene

POST FALLS — Allison Munday had 14 kills, Mackenzie Morris 11 as the Trojans defeated the Vikings 25-16, 25-19, 25-22 in the 5A IEL opener for both.

Kayla Mayo had 18 assists, Courtney Finney 15 for Post Falls (3-0). Tessa Sarff and Megan Wood each had three blocks, Morris two aces, and Munday, Morris and Kalli Minden each had four digs.

“Our girls played with some determination tonight,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “Our seniors helped lead the way. Macky and Alli were not only hitting the ball with some authority, they knew when to play smart. Everyone contributed tonight. Setters put the ball where it needed to be, diggers were all over the place, and our serve kept CHS out of system most of the night. This was a huge team win for us.”

For Coeur d’Alene (1-2), Kelly Horning had nine kills and two blocks. Taylin Rowley had 15 assists and two aces, Delaney Schmidt seven digs, Emily Kladar six digs, Elly Schraeder two blocks, Lauren Phillips two aces.

On Thursday, Coeur d’Alene plays host to Moscow, and Post Falls is home against Glacier (Kalispell, Mont.) and Lakeland.

Priest River

ST. MARIES — Devyn Wilson had 11 kills and 11 digs as the 2A Lumberjacks swept the 3A Spartans 25-8, 25-16, 25-11 in nonleague play.

Dakotah Wilks added 16 assists, Kaci Haeg two aces for St. Maries (3-4), which was coming off a 2-4 performance at the Lewiston Invitational last Saturday to open the season.

“Our passing and our serve-receive were much improved from our tournament play,” St. Maries coach Rachele Asbury said. “In the end, you’re able to get better sets and better hits.”

St. Maries plays host to Kellogg on Thursday.

Lakeside

COEUR d’ALENE — Megan Mackinney had eight kills and eight assists as the host Panthers opened their season with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-19 victory over the Knights in nonleague play at Holy Family Catholic School.

Rylee Peterson had 10 assists and three aces for Coeur d’Alene Charter. Chloe Turnbull had seven kills, Madieline Kociela three aces.

“They played hard the whole time,” said Cynthia Beyer, making her debut as Charter coach. “They passed extremely well.”

Alyssa SiJohn had 20 assists, Tenley Lambert six digs, Sativa Bohlman four kills and Glory Olson four kills and three aces for Lakeside, which faces North Idaho Christian on Thursday at Holy Family Catholic School.

“We’re really young, but I was pleased with a lot of things we did tonight,” Lakeside coach Brad Veile said. “We’re a work in progress, but I’m pleased with what we did tonight.”

Coeur d’Alene Charter travels to Wallace on Thursday.
