Branching out into the college game

We escaped unscathed — relatively — from our first week of picking local high school football games.

Jason Elliott, my esteemed colleague, went 7-0. Yours truly went 6-1, the lone blemish taking Timberlake to beat Frenchtown (Mont.).

This week, for better or worse, we branch out to the four Division I colleges in the loosely called region — Idaho, Washington State, Eastern Washington and Boise State.

Here goes:

COLLEGE

Sacramento State at Idaho

Tonight, 6 p.m.

NELKE: FCS Sac State is coming off a 2-9 season, and is picked to finish 12th in the 13-team Big Sky this season.

Idaho, which will join the Hornets in the Big Sky next year, is coming off a 9-4 season and a bowl victory. Cade Coffey, the ex-Lakeland kicker who is taking over punting and kicking duties from Austin Rehkow, may need to ice his leg after his Vandal debut.

Idaho, 49-7

ELLIOTT: Idaho enters the home opener on a win streak with last year’s Humanitarian Bowl romp of Colorado State. The Vandals are out to show they belong with the big boys before joining the Hornets in the FCS next fall. This one isn’t close.

Idaho, 56-14.

Troy at Boise State

Saturday, 12:45 p.m. PDT

NELKE: Troy is one of the better Sun Belt teams, but Boise State should be anxious to erase the stink of last year’s bowl loss to Baylor.

Boise State, 48-17

ELLIOTT: Brett Rypien throws for five touchdowns by the third quarter.

Boise State, 45-21

Eastern Washington at Texas Tech

Saturday, 1 p.m.

NELKE: Texas Tech is coming off a 5-7 season, and is picked to finish eighth in the Big 12. Eastern has played the big boys tough over the years and has a few skins to show for it, including ones from Oregon State and WSU.

Even with a new coach and without their all-time great receiver, why not bag another one?

EWU, 45-42

ELLIOTT: Sure Texas Tech is a Big 12 team, but they’re not a powerhouse. Eastern Washington has a legit shot to make this the most entertaining game of the weekend.

Texas Tech, 45-42

Montana State at Washington State

Saturday, 7:30 p.m.

NELKE: We like Jeff Choate, and he earned some points in Montana last year by beating the Griz in Missoula. But the Cougars aren’t going to lose their third straight opener, at home, to an FCS opponent.

Are they?

WSU, 48-14

ELLIOTT: The Cougars have a bad taste in their mouths from a disappointing finish in the Holiday Bowl. This is a game they should win easily if they want to be considered a contender the Pac-12 Conference title, let alone the Rose Bowl.

Washington State, 35-17

HIGH SCHOOL

Coeur d’Alene (0-1) at Central Valley (0-0)

Friday, 7 p.m.

NELKE: Idaho teams usually have a bit of an advantage this week. Most have already opened their seasons, while this week marks the opener for Washington schools. Coeur d’Alene routed CV 48-11 last year, but the Bears rebounded to finish 7-3.

Coeur d’Alene, 36-28

ELLIOTT: No flights or long commutes needed this week. Coeur d’Alene gets it going this week.

Coeur d’Alene, 42-28

Lake City (0-1) vs. Lewis and Clark (0-0)

Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Joe Albi Stadium, Spokane

NELKE: Lake City’s 34-10 loss at Madison last week was a bit deceiving in that the Timberwolves imploded near the goal line on at least a couple of occasions. LC (the Spokane one) went 3-7 last year, and was pasted 51-6 at LC (the Idaho one) last year.

Lake City, 51-6

ELLIOTT: The Timberwolves, with a game under their belts, get it done on the turf at Joe Albi Stadium.

Lake City, 35-17

Post Falls vs. Mead

Friday, 6 p.m. at Roos Field, Cheney

NELKE: After trouncing Sandpoint 56-12 last week, Post Falls quickly turned its attention to Mead, which whipped the Trojans 41-3 last year on the same red turf. This one should be closer.

Mead, 32-29

ELLIOTT: Paybacks can bring some pleasure. This game won’t be a blowout like the one in 2016.

Post Falls, 28-24

Colville at Lakeland

Friday, 7 p.m.

NELKE: Lakeland played a tough opener, losing 47-21 last week at Skyview of Nampa, which is ranked No. 1 in 4A this week. Colville finished 7-4 last season, advancing to the second round of the Washington 1A playoffs. Colville edged Lakeland 7-6 at home last year.

Lakeland, 7-6

ELLIOTT: No bus trip this week for the Hawks of Rathdrum, who played a really good Hawks squad from Nampa last week.

Lakeland, 21-14

Timberlake at Freeman

Friday, 7 p.m.

NELKE: The nonleague trail doesn’t get any easier for Timberlake.

Freeman, 30-14

ELLIOTT: Timberlake’s getting better each week.

Freeman, 35-20

Riverside at St. Maries

Friday, 7 p.m.

NELKE: St. Maries plays at home for the first time since winning its first state 2A title last year.

St. Maries, 36-12

ELLIOTT: Most teams celebrate championships by raising a a banner and ring ceremony. The Lumberjacks will celebrate with another victory.

St. Maries, 28-7

Kendrick at Lakeside

Friday, 7 p.m.

NELKE: Lakeside has designs on challenging for a 1A Division II playoff spot. Kendrick, which made the playoffs last year, was drubbed 60-14 last week by Genesee, ranked No. 2 in 1A Division I.

Kendrick, 22-18

ELLIOTT: The talent is there for the Knights to challenge in the White Star League.

Lakeside, 28-22

Timberwolves outlast Bulldogs in double OT

COEUR d’ALENE — Sandpoint and Lake City, two programs in rebuilding mode, put on an old-fashioned slugfest of a game that took more than four quarters to decide Friday night.
