Aug. 31, 1917 — WIND STIRS FIRES
A high wind from the north last night fanned into flames forest fires in all directions from Sandpoint.
Word arrived from Morton that the settlement was threatened and families were moving out of their houses. They asked immediate assistance.
The fire threatening the Dover camps destroyed a portion of the flume. All work was suspended at the mill and crews were taken out to the camps in an effort to save them from destruction.
A message from Westmond stated there were fires all around that were not under control.
Sandpoint is cleaned of all available fire-fighters and Supervisor Fitzwater has ordered 20 men out from Spokane.

MARRIED MEN EXEMPTIONS ALLOWED
President Wilson’s recent recommendation that married men be exempted under the present call will be carefully adhered to except in cases where marriages have been consummated since the declaration of war. In such cases married men will have to show that their wives are absolute dependents, have no means of support and are unable to support themselves. Where there is a suspicion that marriage was entered into to save the husband from bearing arms the board will not grant exemptions.
