The Ronan golf team just concluded its fourth meet of the season and already they have demonstrated a lot of promise.

Chiefs, Maidens’ coach Frank Ciez really saw this promise for the players that participated in last Friday’s meet at Browning High School.

“We haven’t always had the same people at the tournament and practices,” Ciez said. “All of our players are working pretty hard on putting and chipping. I’ve seen a lot of improvement. Some of our younger golfers are getting in the swing of things and starting to shoot some better scores.”

One player on the boys team that has showed a lot of promise throughout his golf career is Anthony Camel. Camel, whose family is well-known in the area for making a name in basketball, has showcased his skills on the greens. In Camel’s latest outing, he finished second firing a 90.

“He hits the ball really well,” Ciez said. “(Camel) has a very nice fluid swing and he really makes good contact.”

The Maidens’ golf team is focusing on the individual concept because they don’t have enough contestants to field a team.

“You can only have a team score if you have four participants and right now, unless we get more girls, we will never have a team score,” Ciez said.

The Maidens were missing their No. 1 golfer Brooklyn Olson, who couldn’t play in the tournament because she was sick. They still got a significant individual performance from Madison Running Crane.

Running Crane, who shot a 106, tied for fifth in the tournament.

Chiefs, Maidens get ready to host tournament

The Ronan Chiefs, Maidens are preparing to host the Ronan Tournament Thursday at Mission Mountain Golf Course.

The 10-team tournament will include some top-caliber Class A competition, Ciez said.

“This tournament will feature most of our teams in the conference,” Ciez said. “It will be pretty much most of the teams up and down Highway 93. “This will give us an idea of what our conference is doing, how much the kids need to prepare for each other headed into the conference, and to get better before we play in some other tournaments.”

Ciez estimates the tournament will include 50 boys and 35 girls that will play golf Thursday.

“The tournament should be a nice round of golf and hopefully, the weather will be good,” Ciez said.
