MOSES LAKE — Daiman Vasquez emerged from a swath of teammates with a glittering gold rope around his neck.

The University of Miami football team debuted a turnover chain this season. Moses Lake, inspired by Ohio State University wrestling, crafted its own pin chain.

Vasquez was the first of many to don it Wednesday against Wenatchee.

Moses Lake recorded six pins and benefited from five forfeits in a one-sided win, 73-3.

“If a chain is going to be what’s going to get kids to pin then I’m all about it,” head coach Jaime Garza said. “It was something that I knew about it and it was presented to, obviously, the first kid who got a pin and that’s what we need to do.”

Vasquez was the first of six Chiefs to win by fall.

Robert Hipolito, Cruz Vasquez, BJ Mullin, Hunter Cruz and Beau Mauseth took turns with the chain.

With the amount of forfeits, Moses Lake rode the experienced part of its lineup to the lopsided result.

Cruz, a returning state champion, had little issue with Wenatchee’s Kian Davis. After a reset, Cruz grasped Davis’ left leg and flung him to the ground. From there, the pin was a matter of time as Cruz’s work was done in a brisk 51 seconds.

“If every kid could come out with that type of mentality then it’d be quite a spectacular show to see that,” Garza said. “And just how he forces his will upon his opponent and he wrestles with somewhat of a chip on his shoulder and all of a sudden things just start to open up because he’s so physical and he’s in your face from the beginning to the end.

“You’ve got to enjoy that as a coach.”

Moses Lake had four freshmen in its dual lineup — only one was able to wrestle. Cruz Vasquez made quite an impression with the fastest pin of the night — 33 seconds against Miguel Valdovines.

Cruz Vasquez isn’t the only fresh face with skills, though.

“Our freshmen class is studs,” Mullin said. “Jonathan Tanguma, Cruz Vasquez, Max Zamora — those guys are studs — and some other freshmen. They’re going to be good — Hunter White. They’re going to score a lot of points this year in tournaments and stuff.”

Moses Lake 4, Davis 0

YAKIMA — Moses Lake moved its record back to .500 with a sweep of Davis, 4-0.

Moses Lake won the first two games by scores of 725-542 and 700-528.

Haley Rogers led the Chiefs with 191 pins in Game 1 and 166 in Game 2.

The Chiefs edged the Pirates 125-122 in the first Baker game to ensure a victory. Moses Lake also won the second Baker game 167-133.

Moses Lake hosts Ellensburg, 3:30 p.m., today in a non-league match.
