An Elk, Wash., man who eluded authorities after burgling a Rathdrum residence and stealing a pickup truck last summer will spend at least four years in prison.

Jeffrey D. Williams, 45, was sentenced Friday in First District Court to three, four-year, fixed prison terms with six years indeterminate for burglary, grand theft and eluding.

Judge Rich Christensen ran the sentences concurrently at a Friday hearing in Coeur d’Alene.

According to authorities, a Rathdrum resident alerted police June 14 of an ongoing burglary. When deputies arrived, Williams sped away in a stolen pickup truck leading authorities on a high speed chase that ended when deputies employed spike strips on the road to disable the vehicle.

Williams ran away from the pickup truck after its tires were blown, but he was arrested nearby.

Williams, who has an extensive criminal history, according to prosecutors, entered guilty pleas in October.

Since he was 14 years old, Williams has been involved in criminal activities that resulted in felony convictions for grand theft, eluding, assault and burglary. His misdemeanor convictions include obstructing police, larceny and resisting arrest.

“The conduct in this case placed officers and the public at risk,” Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney Barry McHugh said. “A period of imprisonment was necessary to protect the community.”
