Haeg sparks 'Jacks in CIL opener

OROFINO — Kaci Haeg scored 19 points in her first start of the season to pace the St. Maries Lumberjacks past the Orofino Maniacs 55-27 on Saturday night in the Central Idaho League opener for both schools.
Haeg was moved into the starting lineup after starting post Alena Davenport torn her ACL in Thursday’s game at Sandpoint, and will miss the remainder of the season.
“Kaci did a great job stepping in for Alena,” St. Maries coach Jay Sines said. “We were able to create a lot of turnovers and got some easy transition baskets.”
Kaylee Auer had 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals, Madison Cordell had 11 points and six steals and Paige Sines three steals for St. Maries (3-3), which hosts Bonners Ferry on Thursday.

POST FALLS — Melody Kempton scored 16 of her game-high 21 points in the first quarter as the Trojans ran past the Highlanders in a nonleague game at The Arena.
“We played pretty well and with some good intensity in the first quarter,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “Melody had most of her points off of offensive rebounds, and really got us started. Shadle played a lot better in the second half. They just fought hard and kept playing.”
Bayley Brennan scored 11 points and Kempton grabbed 13 rebounds for Post Falls (6-0), which travels to Richland on Tuesday.

RATHDRUM — Sofi Schnepf had six points and eight rebounds for the Hawks in a loss to the Cardinals at Hawk Court.
“Medical Lake is a really solid team and their pressure defense was solid,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “We just had a hard time making baskets at critical times. We seemed to be playing right with them but they made some baskets and we didn’t. Our effort was great, though.”
Makenzie Edinger scored seven points for Lakeland (1-5), which hosts Kellogg on Thursday.

SANDPOINT — Senior Kadi Bateman poured in a game-high 23 points, and the Badgers scored their first win over the Bulldogs since 2012 in the nonleague game at Les Rogers Court.
Miranda Wenk posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards, and Kassy Skeen and Holly Ansley combined for 27 points to lead the Badgers (5-0), who used an 11-point second quarter edge to build an early lead. Badgers coach Travis Hinthorn felt his team handled the Bulldogs’ press well, which was key.
“We’re going to have to handle pressure. Breaking the press is a big thing for us,” he said. “It was good for us to see that kind of pressure.”
Ciera Bailey scored a season-high 19 points in defeat for the Bulldogs (3-5), who had a tough shooting night. Grace Kirscher added 16 points and five rebounds, and Dawson Driggs four points and five boards.
Sandpoint gets a break in the schedule before hosting East Valley on Dec. 19.

LAPWAI — Tommia Pakootas scored 13 points as the Knights beat Yakama Tribal School in the opening game of the Lapwai Wildcat Shootout.
Lakeside outscored Yakama Tribal 19-8 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
“We finally got some shots to fall and broke their press,” Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. “We had a nice, big quarter to kind of pull away.”

“We didn’t handle the pressure very well early in the game,” Dohrman said. “I wish we could have had a better quarter, and we could have made a game of it.”

NOXON — The Clark Fork girls crossed the Montana border to face Noxon, falling 41-23 in nonleague girls basketball on Saturday.
Brooke Stevens scored 12 points to lead the Wampus Cats (1-5), who also got four points from Tessa Sutton and three from Kaylee Banks.
“We came out pretty strong and were ahead in the first quarter,” said Cats head coach Jordan Adams. “We had a pretty good press on them, but they were able to beat us and took over the entire game.”
Clark Fork is at North Idaho Christian on Monday, seeking the season sweep.
