Basin roundup: Moses Lake finishes second at IE Classic

SPOKANE VALLEY — Moses Lake put four wrestlers in the finals and finished second at the Inland Empire Classic with 202.5 points.

Mead totaled 225.5 points to win the team title.

Hunter Cruz pinned his first two opponents then beat Emilio Ramos of Kennewick 7-2 to reach the 170-pound finals. There, Cruz outlasted Pullman’s Kiran Srikanth 3-0.

Christien Knopp, Daiman Vasquez and Payton Castro were all tournament runners-up.

Knopp lost a narrow decision to Central Valley’s Bradley Wiggs 5-4 via tiebreaker in the 145-pound championship. Wiggs is ranked seventh at 138 pounds.

Vasquez also lost a close finals match. Hunter Gregerson of University captured the 195-pound title over Vasquez 3-2.

Castro, matched up against second-ranked John Keiser of Central Valley, lost 7-2.

Jonathan Tanguma (third), Hunter White (fourth), Xzavier Villarreal (sixth), Beau Mauseth (third), Bailey Sanchez (fifth) and Pablo Mejia (sixth) also placed for the Chiefs.

Warden wins Connell Invite

CONNELL — Warden put eight wrestlers in the finals, placed 11 and won the Connell Invite, totaling 191 points.

Host Connell was second with 171.5 points and Royal took third with 120.

Warden crowned four champions: Anthony Martinez, Bryce Martinez, Tyrone Mendez and Martin Dominguez. Tony Martinez, Edgar Hernandez, Rodrigo Ozuna and Holden Haworth were runners-up.

Royal’s Dominic Martinez and Daniel Bonilla won the 120-pound and 160-pound titles, respectively.

SPOKANE — Quincy and Ephrata won two duals apiece at the West Valley Wrestlerama.

Ephrata’s Sammy Flores went unbeaten through five duals.

Othello wins Warden Invite

WARDEN — Othello had two champions and held off Eastmont to win the Warden Invite with 187 points.

The Class 4A Wildcats were second with 115 points.

Gabby Rodriguez and Elizabeth Giles placed first at 105 pounds and 145 pounds, respectively.

Bernice Mendoza (fourth), Emily Mendez (second), Victoria Mendoza (fourth) and Estephania Vargas (second) also placed for the Huskies.

Boys basketball

Ephrata splits league games

Ephrata split a pair of league games, losing to Toppenish 63-61 and beating Wapato on the road 68-62.

Toppenish’s Isiah Perez sunk two free throws with 12 seconds left to break a 61-61 tie.

Caden Blankenship led the Tigers with 16 points. Hunter James scored 11 and Jake Oxos and Josh Benthem added 10 each.

Blankenship scored a team-high 18 points in Ephrata’s win over Wapato.

Quincy loses two league games

Quincy could not contain Prosser and lost 65-39.

The Mustangs had five players score 10 or more points.

Max Molina scored 11 points, but Quincy fell to Ellensburg 68-28.

Kittitas 88, Warden 42

KITTITAS — Gonzaga commit Brock Ravet notched a triple-double and Kittitas blew out Warden 88-42.

Ravet dazzled with 30 points, 11 rebounds, 12 assists.

Dreyton Martinez led the Cougars with 16 points.

Wahluke 78, Cle Elum-Roslyn 52

CLE ELUM — Sergio Pineda scored a game-high 24 points and Wahluke beat Cle Elum-Roslyn 78-52.

Ricardo Cabrera added 20 points for the Warriors.

Kittitas 84, Almira/Coulee-Hartline 44

COULEE CITY — Almira/Coulee-Hartline struggled against the reigning 2B champs in an 84-44 loss.

Payton Nielsen scored 24 of the Warriors’ 44 points. Ravet exploded for 41 points.

Royal 78, Goldendale 55

GOLDENDALE — Corbin Christensen recorded 18 points and Royal continued its winning ways over Goldendale 78-55.

Isaac Ellis and Owen Ellis added 15 and 17 points, respectively.

Ephrata falls to 1-2 in CWAC

Ephrata fell to 1-2 in league after a pair of CWAC losses.

Ephrata narrowly lost to Toppenish 55-50. Katelyn Ostrowski poured in 16 points and Madison Martin added 12 to pace the Tigers.

Ephrata dropped its game at Wapato 55-42. Ostrowski scored a team-high nine points against the Wolves.

Quincy remains winless

Quincy lost a pair of lopsided road games to fall of 0-5 overall.

The Jacks lost to undefeated Prosser 67-21 and Ellensburg 64-18.

Avery Vandeveen scored four points against the Mustangs; Jacqueline Garces also scored four against the Bulldogs.

Kittitas 47, Warden 46

KITTITAS — A last-second shot by Amelia Mohn downed Warden on the road.

Mohn scored with three seconds left to hand Warden a 47-46 loss.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 62, Kittitas 17

COULEE CITY — Tiffany Boutain scored 19 points and Almira/Coulee-Hartline routed Kittitas 62-17.

Gabi Isaak added 18 points.

The Warriors led 35-9 at halftime.

Women’s basketball

Big Bend finishes 2-1 at Everett Classic Tournament

EVERETT — Big Bend continued its strong start with a 2-1 record at the Everett Classic Tournament.

The Vikings rallied to beat Linn-Benton 85-71. Big Bend trailed after one quarter, but took an 11-point lead into the fourth quarter.

Hailey Garrity stuffed the stat sheet with 22 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block. Callie Gronning chipped in 16 points. Sunnie Martinez and Kelsey Foster scored 13 points each.

Big Bend lost its first game of the season to Everett 91-86.

The Vikings outscored the Trojans 58-49 in the second half, but could not erase their deficit. Gronning and Foster scored 17 points apiece.

Big Bend ended its tournament run with a 78-58 win over Skagit Valley.

Martinez drilled six three-pointers for a game-high 25 points. Martinez added seven assists, five rebounds and two steals.

Gronning added 19 points and Miranda Johnson scored 12 off the bench.
