Jerry Jean Bayley, 79
Jerry Jean Bayley, 79, passed away Dec. 6, 2017, from heart complications, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
Jerry was born in Casa Grande, Ariz., on April 26, 1938, to Carl and Margaret Bayley. He attended Casa Grande Elementary Schools until the eighth grade. The family then moved to Notus, Idaho, where they farmed. Jerry graduated from Notus High School in 1956, where he played quarterback on the football team and catcher on the baseball team and was student body president.
After graduation, he immediately joined the Navy. He served on the USS Menhaden submarine from 1956 until 1959. He graduated from the College of Idaho in 1965, where he played football. He started his first job teaching and coaching in Payette, Idaho, then moved to Superior, Ariz., to be the head football coach. In 1969, he moved to St. Maries, Idaho, to coach football. After two years, he became principal. He holds the record in Idaho for being in the same school as principal the longest — 30 years.
In 1962, he married Glenda Greenfield and they had two children, Michael Lynn Bayley and Heather Marie Steffenson.
Jerry was very devoted to education in the state of Idaho. During his career, he was given the IHSAA Distinguished Service Award in 1992, and he was a board member of the Idaho High School Activities Association from 1993 to 1998. Jerry was inducted into the Idaho High School Activities Association Hall of Fame in 1998. He served as a member of the Commission on Schools and Colleges from 1982 to 1995 — traveling all over the Pacific Northwest to evaluate schools and colleges.
After retirement, he moved to Post Falls, Idaho, where he traveled everywhere to watch his grandchildren participate in their activities as he had watched his own children. He really enjoyed playing golf and traveling in his retirement days.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years; his son, Mike and daughter-in-law Teresa of Rathdrum, Idaho; his daughter, Heather and son-in-law Paul Steffenson of Des Moines, Wash.; his granddaughter, Chelsea and his grandson, Derek. He is also survived by his sister, Fon and brother-in-law Don Couture of Black Diamond, Wash.; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Rob and Joyce Greenfield of Caldwell, Idaho, and Rick and Kris Greenfield of Olympia, Wash.; his nieces, Cyndee Blackmore, Tiffany Jorgensen and Callie Greenfield; nephew Jake Greenfield; along with numerous cousins and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Margaret Bayley; and his brother, Lynn.
