COEUR d’ALENE — Day Day Higgins scored 15 points and Kenyon Spottedhorse added 12 as Lakeside beat North Idaho Christian 54-42 on Tuesday night at Holy Family Catholic School, handing the Royals their first loss of the season.

“We were really good defensively; our rebounding was a lot better than the first time we played them,” said Lakeside coach James Twoteeth, whose North Star League team lost 73-60 at home to North Idaho Christian earlier in the season. “We concentrated on shutting down (Garrett) White and (Cross) Pilgrim, and we took care of the ball better.”

Phil Connelly led North Idaho Christian (9-1) of the Mountain Christian League with 13 points, and White and Pilgrim added 10 each.

On Thursday, Lakeside travels to Logos of Moscow, and North Idaho Christian plays host to Pullman Christian at Holy Family Catholic School.

POTLATCH — Lumberjack coach Bryan Chase has told his team that eventually, the team’s defense was going to have to carry them.

It did just that in a nonleague win over the Loggers.

“Our will and determination was good in the fourth quarter,” said Chase, whose team held Potlatch to four points in the fourth quarter. “I’ve been kind of preaching to these guys that we’re going to have to win with our defense. And we had to do that tonight, because we didn’t shoot that well.”
