SPIRIT LAKE — A Spirit Lake woman received an uninvited guest Sunday night.
Samual R. Vanhatten, 28, Coeur d'Alene, was arrested at 8:20 p.m. for unlawful entry into the home in the area of Tenth Avenue and Adams Street on the east side of town.
The middle-aged woman told Spirit Lake Police that she was in her bed with her daughter playing a video game when her dogs began to bark from the kitchen and living room. She said that when she went to investigate in the dark, the dogs began to bark louder.
"(The woman) then noticed a male unknown to her standing near the rear sliding door," the police report states.
The woman told police the sliding door was unlocked.
When the woman asked the intruder what he was doing in her house, he didn't respond and walked toward the front door of the residence, according to police.
"(The woman) then ran to her bedroom, grabbed her phone and called 911," the report states.
She then returned to the kitchen to keep an eye on the man and told him that he was scaring her.
"That's not my intention," he said, according to the report.
She said the man then unlocked the front door and opened it.
"Can I go now?" he said according to the report.
The woman replied, "Uh, yeah."
The man then left the home, the report states.
When police responded, they saw a male matching the description the woman gave to police.
"While detaining the male, he appeared to be sluggish and I noticed the smell of an alcoholic beverage," the report states.
Vanhatten, according to police, said he "would just like to go to sleep."
He told police that he'd been drinking and was walking back to a friend's house. He denied that he had entered the home of someone he didn't know.
The woman identified the suspect to police as the man who was in her home.
Vanhatten was being held at the Kootenai County Jail on Tuesday on a $5,000 bond.
He has 12 previous bookings into the local jail since 2010, including for possession of a controlled substance, driving while suspended and probation violations.
