WARDEN — Othello crowned two champions, had two wrestlers place second, and the Huskies dominated the competition earning a 72-point margin of victory at the Warden Invite Saturday, Dec. 9.

The 4A Eastmont Wildcats were a distant second with 115 points. Host Warden placed fifth with 98 points.

“I thought the girls wrestled well. They went out aggressive and wanted to make a statement from get go,” coach JJ Martinez said. “I was really pleased on how we bounced back on some losses we had. We still have so much to work on and to improve on as individuals. But if we can fix our mistakes, it’s going to make our team so much stronger.”

It took Gabriela Rodriguez (105) just 1:18 seconds to pin Tonasket’s Mandi Wilson in her championship match. Elizabeth Giles (145) won by fall over Brooklyn Wurm-Wertz 1:22 into her match. Emily Mendez (110) and Estephania Vargas (235) turned in solid efforts with second-place finishes. Bernice Mendoza (100) and Victoria Mendoza (190) placed 4th on the day. Othello also had two wrestlers finish 5th and three place 6th respectively.

“What I like about this group is although they know we lost key assets from last years team, and will not be satisfied on just being at state tourney this year,” Martinez said. “They want to battle again for hardware. For that to happen the leaders on the team realize they have to take it one match at a time and learn from every match wrestled.”

The Huskies are back on the mats Thursday at home for the Othello Mix and match. The action gets underway at 6 p.m.
