Willie, Lila and a thing called Twitter

I need to ask you all a favor.

It’s about answering a question, but hang on...

Before we get to that, there’s a story you’ve just got to hear.

Almost all of my correspondence with readers comes through emails.

Oh, every once in a while, someone will call The Press switchboard, discover I’m not around and leave a number to call.

But right at the end of our adventure with great lines from movies — and there will be more of that — a lady named Lila dropped off a handwritten letter for me at the paper.

Lila said straightaway that she was 81 (perhaps explaining her fondness for good old written mail), and she wanted to chip in with her favorite movie line.

It’s from “The Electric Horseman,” a really cool film made in 1979.

The movie starred Robert Redford and Jane Fonda — remember, this was 38 years ago — and it was basically a love story with a message.

THE FUNNY thing, though, is that the best line in the whole movie didn’t come from either of the two superstars.

No, it was delivered by Willie Nelson, playing sidekick and manager to Redford’s hard-drinking, broken-down cowboy.

Lila nailed it, but she also predicted that we wouldn’t be able to print Willie’s brief but awesome monologue — and young lady, you were absolutely right.

But Lila’s reaction was just as good as Nelson’s bawdy line. After quoting Willie, she wrote: “YOWZA!”

I loved it.

Lila’s letter came to mind for two reasons: First, it was hilarious; but second, it actually has a connection to the favor I mentioned in our very first sentence today.

See, times have changed since “The Electric Horseman” was a box office hit.

We connect these days through a zillion sources — on social media, through various apps and with technology that would have been considered science fiction nearly four decades ago.

And in fact, this very column, A Brand New Day, has its own page on Facebook.

Not only that, but tying the whole package together, I’m going to be exchanging comments with you on Twitter.

ALL WE need now are followers.

I know that plenty of you are reading the print edition of A Brand New Day, because of all the emails I’ve been fielding.

So my favor is simple: I want you to answer a question, but respond ONLY on Facebook or Twitter.

You can reach the page at: facebook.com/BrandNewDayCDAPress.

Or on Twitter...

It’s almost the same: @BrandNewDayCDAPress.

(There are periods after those sentences, but they’re NOT part of the addresses, OK?)

Now here’s the question: Do you like Willie Nelson’s music — yes or no — and if you do, what’s his best song?

Right, jump on social media, gang.

Willie Nelson...

Best song...

And answer ONLY on Facebook or Twitter. I promise you’ll get a response, and we’ll all have some fun with the whole thing.

C’mon, Lila...

See you there!
