Young author celebrates first novel

Few writers can say they published their first book at the age of 18, but Jackson E. Graham can.
His book, “Sword and Scion: Into the Dark Mountains” is set to be released this month.
Graham will talk about how it came about Monday, Dec. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Library Network at Hayden.
“This is a celebration. I want other young writers to know outlandish ideas can be turned into something you can use,” Graham said.
The library is an appropriate place for Graham’s book launch, as it is one of his favorite hangouts. It’s also where he took advantage of author presentations from Jack Castle, Kim E. Morgan, Mary Hanks, and Fonda Lee.
Graham said he took away inspiration and encouragement from these authors, as well as practical help.
“Jackson’s experience is why we are in the library business — to provide the tools to discovery through books, technology, and programs,” said Nick Madsen, youth services specialist.
Graham wrote and illustrated his first book at the age of 6, and he has won prizes in the Coeur d’Alene Public Library’s Young Readers Competition for the last three years.
As a homeschool student, he has successfully completed Camp National Novel Writing Month fours years in a row, where participants write a novel in 30 days. It was out of one of these camps that his epic fantasy tale was born.
The presentation is free and no registration is required. Light refreshments will be served.
