Prosser girls run away from Ephrata

EPHRATA — Ephrata girls coach Aaron Ross through his head back, signifying what a night, as Avery Mickelsen fired a no-look pass to where she thought Madison Martin would be on the wing.
Instead of being a dandy drop-and-pop from the corner, Martin broke for the basket and the ball sailed into the front row in Saturday night’s Central Washington Athletic Conference loss against Prosser.
The Tigers (4-4, 1-4) might have been on the same page, but they weren’t flippin’ it at the same time, never leading in their 60-45 loss to the CWAC-leading Mustangs (7-0, 5-0).
Point guard Katelyn Ostrowski tried to go in Friday’s loss at Selah, but couldn’t manage with a sprained right wrist. She sat it out against Prosser and the Tigers pushed on without the 5-foot-9 senior.
Martin finished with a team-high 10 points. Mickelsen scored seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter, and Jamie Oxos added eight.
The Mustangs got off the bus and went straight to work. The game was essentially decided in the first quarter when Marissa Cortes scored seven of her game-high 14 points. Asia Olivarez hit one of her three 3-point goals on the night, and the Mustangs were off and running with a 21-7 lead.
Freshman point guard Payton Hagy knocked down a trey from the wing to start the third quarter to make it a 38-26 game early in the period. Mya Buchert converted on a three-point play, knocking down the free throw with 1:55 left in the third to get the Tigers to within 48-32.
But the Tigers, who outscored the Mustangs 16-14 in the second quarter, never could rebound from the fast start and trailed Prosser from start-to-finish.
The Tigers are at Ellensburg on Tuesday, then head into the holiday break. They host Othello on Dec. 28.
