The Christmas claw

A Post Falls boy with a penchant for arcade “claw” games is putting his gaming gains to good use this holiday season.

Mike Witherspoon, a fifth-grader at Seltice Elementary in Post Falls and an Arrow of Light Scout with Troop 13, is donating seven bags of stuffed toys to Children’s Village for Christmas.

“I am working on some of my badges for scouts, and this is a great way to give back to the community,” Mike said. “Also, I have known some kids who went to Children’s Village, and I think they might be scared and lonely when they get there.”

He said he hopes the stuffed toys help the kids feel more comfortable at Children’s Village, a nonprofit in Coeur d’Alene that provides a residential home for children in need of a safe haven from abuse, neglect or severe family crisis.

“At Christmas, I don’t think they get very many presents, so maybe they can get some stuffed toys, too, so that they have more gifts.”

Mike likes to play the “claw” machines and collects the toys throughout the year. He likes to save the “gamer” points from the toys and redeem them for prizes online, but realized his collection was getting quite large, so decided to put them to good use for charity.
