LAS VEGAS — In searching to find the best competition they could find and a team that demanded the Post Falls boys basketball to be better, the Trojans were just that in Wednesday’s opening round of the Tarkanian Classic at the Orleans Arena.
Better.
Tanner McCliment-Call had 23 points and 10 rebounds and Jake Pfennigs had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Trojans in a 60-54 win over Rancho Christian High of Temecula, Calif. — ranked 10th in the nation by MaxPreps.
“We came down here looking to find the best competition we could find and teams that demand us to be better,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “And we knew we’d face teams that would make us better down here. Without the loss to Gonzaga Prep, I don’t think we could do the things we did. Today, we played a team very similar to that, and we wouldn’t have won if we didn’t learn from that Gonzaga Prep game.”
Post Falls (3-1) outrebounded Rancho Christian (6-1) 37-27. Games in this tourney are played in two 12-minute halves.
“Tanner came out on a mission and played with purpose,” McLean said. “He scored our first eight points and two of his baskets were right in the heart of their defense. Jake hit three 3-pointers and we did a good job of setting screens and setting the floor for what we wanted to do. I thought we executed really well today against a team that presented a lot of challenges. It’s not every day you have Pac-12 (Conference) coaches here watching your team play. Our depth really showed and all 11 guys filled their role.”
McLean also praised Matt Fleming and Alan Ballew for their minutes in a reserve role.
“Both Matt and Alan played well and helped stretch the minutes by coming in and competing,” McLean said. “If you believe in your teammates, good things will happen.”
Post Falls plays tonight at 8:40 at Bishop Gorman High against Salesian (Calif).
Isaiah Mobley, a 6-9 junior who is drawing interest from Pac-12 schools, finished with 24 points for Rancho Christian.

“We did a much better job on him defensively in the second half,” Lake City coach Kelly Reed said of Quinnett. “We did a better job of doing the little things, getting our hands on the ball and more of the hustle things we need to do to be successful. It was a good all-around effort tonight.”
