Rathdrum man to spend holidays in jail

A Rathdrum man with a propensity to scrum and run from law enforcement will spend the holidays behind bars as he awaits sentencing next year on a series of charges, including two felony counts of battering police officers.
What started as a getaway attempt from police along Highway 41 a year ago, and eventually spiraled into a brawl with deputies, will keep Brandon L. Anderson behind bars at least until a Feb. 1 sentencing in First District Court.
Anderson appeared in court this month on charges of driving under the influence and eluding, charges that eventually prompted the warrants for his arrest that resulted in a brawl with deputies last summer.
He was sentenced Dec. 14 to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine for the DUI. The eluding charge was dismissed.
Those charges stem from a September 2016 incident in which motorists along Highway 41 reported a man in a white Dodge Durango spinning brodies and “laughing at other drivers and running people off the road,” according to a police report.
Rathdrum policeman Adam Clement caught up with the Dodge and its driver — Anderson — as the Durango sped east, driving in the middle of Nagel Road.
The Durango made a U-turn, faced the officer and headed south on Thayer Road. He stopped once, feigning to pull over for the policeman, then waved at the patrol officer and sped away, according to a police report.
Clement caught up with Anderson at the suspect’s residence on the 6500 block of Buffalo Grass Lane, chased him through the house, tazing him twice before subduing him.
Almost a year later, in the summer of 2017, after he had accrued several warrants for his arrest — including warrants for failing to appear for court dates for DUI and eluding — Anderson was encountered by deputies after midnight in a Coeur d’Alene neighborhood.
Deputies chased him through yards, over two fences, and engaged in fisticuffs with the defendant before dousing him with pepper spray and subduing him.
The deputies were treated for cuts and bruises and Anderson was charged with the two felonies and additional misdemeanors.
At last week’s hearing, Anderson told Judge James Combo he was comfortable with staying in jail where he has resided for 143 days. The incidents that put him there, he said, were the result of blowing inherited money on booze and drugs.
“It was a rough time in my life,” Anderson told the judge. “I got an inheritance. I shouldn’t have been drinking and doing drugs. And this isn’t an excuse. Being in jail has helped a little and I’m sober and healthier.”
