'Tots' unleashes Christmas smiles
CAROLINE LOBSINGER | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 7 years, 4 months AGO
I grew up in the Tri-Cities, Wash., and have always loved to write. I attended the University of Washington, where I earned a double major in journalism and political science, with an area of emphasis in history. I am the fifth out of six kids — don't believe any of the stories that my siblings tell. To be able to tell others stories and take photos for a living is a dream come true — and I considered myself blessed to be a community journalist. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, hiking and spending time outdoors, genealogy, reading, and watching the UW Huskies and the Seattle Seahawks. I am a servant to my cat, Frankie, who yes, will eat anything and everything in sight … even wedding cookies. | December 23, 2017 12:00 AM

If you do a quick search on the Internet to phrases that include the word, “smile,” you’ll find endless websites filled with quotes about smiles, their power and their meaning.
But the true power of a smile — its joy, its magic and its light — can be found no further than at the other end of the Sandpoint Lions’ Toys for Tots program.
Each year, the community rallies together with the Lions to ensure more than 900 local youngsters have a chance to open that gift — THE gift, the one that is exactly what the wanted, that could only have come from Santa — and unleash a blinding smile of pure joy.
THAT is what the Sandpoint Lions work so hard to accomplish, THAT is what the community digs deep to accomplish. Please consider donating to Toys for Tots and help unleash those smiles.
Generous contributions were received from: Cabinet Mountain Grill coin jar, $21; Cenex Clark Fork coin jar, $33.50; Clark Fork Pantry coin jar, $9.30; Holiday Shores coin jar, $46.25; Evergreen Lumber coin jar, $5.96; Dairy Depot coin jar, $26.14; Consolidated Supply Co., Sandpoint manager account, $800; Knights of Columbus, Father Kelly Council No. 2888, $100; Larry & Diane Ellis, $35; Naticia Litven, in loving memory of Bob Klatt, $100; Daniel & Debra Butler, $50; anonymous, $50; anonymous, $100; Gordy & Kathy Robinson, in memory of Sally Eyer, $100; Leslie Downs, in memory of Marion, $100; Rex & Maria Williams, $50; The Floor Show, $100; Al Kluver & Family, $50; Edward & Susan Summerhill, $50; Hauser Lions Club, $250; 219/ Claudia Dick, $250; 219/Patrons, $201; Second Avenue Pizza, $19; and Pend Oreille Veterinary, $3.99.
Today’s donations add up to $2,301.14, bringing the total to $46,629.74 — with just a few day until Christmas to go.
The goal for this year’s campaign is $50,000 — the same as it has been in past years. The Lions make the most of the money by shopping bargains, and with the assistance of generous local businesses.
The Toys for Tots program provides free new toys for children living in the Lake Pend Oreille School District, from Sandpoint to Clark Fork and all points in-between. A Christmas dinner for the family is also provided.
