COEUR d'ALENE — A 30-year-old man who threatened to shoot a motorist in Coeur d’Alene with a gun last summer will serve two years on probation and pay $1,100 in restitution and fines.
Jason Guffey, who served 163 days in jail following the July incident, accepted two lesser guilty pleas last week and apologized to the court for the behavior that brought him before the judge.
Guffey was in jail on a $91,000 bond for two counts of aggravated assault after he allegedly chased down a motorist on 15th Street and pointed a gun at the driver. The driver sped away, but Guffey allegedly followed her, and again pointed a silver Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun at her while passing her in the opposite lane, according to a police report.
The charges against Guffey — whose criminal history includes battery, assault, resisting arrest, grand theft and burglary charges — were reduced from felonies to two misdemeanor assaults through a plea agreement.
Judge Anna Eckhart sentenced Guffey to 163 days in jail with 163 days credit for the time he had already served, and imposed two $300 misdemeanor fines and court fees.
Eckhart added a 180-day suspended sentence and $500 in fines and fees for the conviction of exhibiting a deadly weapon, also a misdemeanor. She ordered 30 days discretionary jail time that probation officers may use for minor probation violations while Guffey serves two years on supervised probation.
According to police, Guffey was driving a silver Honda when he chased down the victim’s car, forced it to pull over and then pointed a firearm at the driver and her passenger. The driver sped away, and Guffey chased her car, passing her in the opposite lane and pointing the handgun at her as she drove to the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, according to a police report.
The 25-year-old victim was visibly shaken when she talked to officers. She told detectives that she knew Guffey and that he wanted money. While at the police department, Guffey reportedly sent text messages to the victim urging her to not talk with police.
Guffey was originally held on a $100,000 bond, but the amount was reduced so he could be an inmate worker while in the Kootenai County jail.
