Lake City seniors shine in opener

COEUR d’ALENE — James Carlson scored a game-high 20 points for Lake City in a 60-51 win over the Mead Panthers in the opening day of the Lake City Holiday Classic on Wednesday.
“James was just awesome tonight both offensively and defensively,” Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said.
Hunter Schaffer had 13 points and Kyle Manzardo 12 points for Lake City (3-4), which faces South Kitsap today at 5:15 p.m.
“Kyle got us started defensively and Hunter did a great job as well,” Reed said. “It was great senior leadership and I thought we guarded really well for three quarters. It was a great team effort by everyone and really solid effort.”
Isaiah Saldana scored 13 points for Mead (2-6).

COEUR d’ALENE — Drew Hostetter hit four 3-pointers on his way to a team-high 15 points, leading the Vikings past the Wolves of Port Orchard, Wash., in the Lake City Holiday Classic.
“We were definitely a little rusty coming off the break and it wasn’t our cleanest game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Tony Hanna said. “Hostetter shot the ball really well, and we did what we had to do to get a win and played well on the defensive end.”
Caleb Beggerly scored 14 points for Coeur d’Alene (4-2), which faces Columbia River today at 2 p.m. at Lake City High.

COEUR d’ALENE — Colby Gennett scored 14 points for the Trojans, who were held to 13 second half points in a loss to the Chieftains of Vancouver, Wash., on the opening day of the Lake City Holiday Classic.
“Columbia River executed what they wanted to do and didn’t settle for a rushed shot,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “They did a good job of getting the ball where they wanted to, and had to be happy with how they executed down the stretch.”
Jake Pfennigs scored 13 points for Post Falls (4-4), which faces Peninsula tonight at 7 at Lake City High.

SPOKANE VALLEY — Colton Counts led a balanced attack with 19 points for the Tigers of Spirit Lake in a win over the Tigers of Tonasket on the opening day of the West Valley tournament.
“We shot the ball well and defended really well,” Timberlake coach Michael Scott said. “We didn’t give up too many wide open looks and got contribution from everyone. We were balanced really well on the offensive end.”
Jordan Hardy scored 11 points for Timberlake (4-6), which faces St. George’s on Friday at West Valley High.

SAN DIEGO — Jonny Hillman scored on a layup with 1.9 seconds remaining to send the Jaguars past the Gauchos in the opening round of the Holiday Classic at Santa Fe Christian High.
“We came out in the first half and they controlled the tempo and we didn’t play we wanted to play,” said Genesis Prep coach Marsell Colbert, whose team trailed 16-5 after the first quarter. “We settled down and got control of the game. We had a few guys that really stepped up to help us weather the storm and make a comeback.”
Jacob Schroeder had four points, Max Reidt eight points and Kon Ajang five blocked shots and eight rebounds for Genesis Prep (5-2), which faces Mater Dei Christian tonight at 5:25 in a quarterfinal game in the American Division.
“The first game of a tournament is always the toughest,” Colbert said. “It was kind of a feeling-out game. Jacob and Max made some huge plays for us today. Jacob extended possessions for us with his offensive rebounding and Max got some key deflections and blocked shots and attacked the basket. Kon just manned the paint and changed the complection of the game with a dunk.”
