MATTAWA — Things are heating up for the Lady Warriors as the team won two of three games this past week. Wahluke dropped a 50-35 league contest to River View Dec. 19, and then rolled past nonleague opponents Highland on Dec. 21, and Kittitas on Dec. 22, to move to 4-3 overall.

The Warriors offense struggled to put points on the board in the is the loss to the Panthers, posting just 19 in the first half and 16 in the second half. Jacky Barajas turned in a solid effort for Wahluke with 12 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Kaylynn Holiday added 7 points and 9 boards.

Kaylynn Holiday drained 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, and Jacky Hidalgo dumped in 18 and dished out 6 assists to propel the home team to a come-from-behind victory over the Scots.

Highland held a six-point edge at intermission. But the Warriors dug deep and went on a 36-13 second half run to blow past the West Conference foe.

“We played pretty miserably in the first half, mostly defensively, and were down 23-17. Highland isn’t big, but quick and scrappy so we needed to be patient and get it inside to Kaylynn,” coach Brock Anderson said. “The second half was entirely different — perhaps our best half of the year. The girls did a great job executing, getting it inside or reversing it back to Jacky Hidalgo for the shot or drive and we pulled away to win easily.”

Jacky Hidalgo hit for 16 points on 3-of-6 shots from beyond the arch and added 6 assists in the contest to lead Wahluke to its second win in as many nights Dec. 22.

Jacky Barajas added 12 points and 5 rebounds, and Alex Bangs finished with 9 points, on 3-of-5 shots from 3-point range. Martha Baragan pulled down a team high 7 rebounds. The Warriors held a 13-6 lead after the first quarter was in the books, and was up top 31-21 at the half. The Coyotes managed to make a game of it with 24-second half points the Warriors 22, but it wasn’t enough to pull out the win.

“The game was played in the main gym at CWU and I guess our shooters liked the surroundings,” Anderson said. “Kittitas has a pretty solid 6-2 post player who kind of thwarted our inside game — plus Kaylynn only played about 10-12 minutes the whole game due to foul trouble so it was important that other people step up and they did. The second half Kittitas took away our perimeter game, which allowed Jacky Barajas to roam free in the middle of their zone and she was fantastic there, scoring 10 of her 12 points. I’ve always felt that one of our strengths is our versatility and it showed in this game.”

Wahluke is back in action Dec. 29 and 30 for the two-day Crush in the Slush Tournament in Port Townsend.
