Super Bowl Sunday means ... the dramatic conclusion

Last things first.

Last place: Rob Smith, general manager, Findlay Automotive. But just hold onto your stick shift for a moment. Smith more than capably stepped in for his predecessor, inheriting the Coeur d’Alene Press All-Star Pigskin Prognosticators cellar through no handicapping fault of his own. But Smith went from cellar to stellar. Since joining the gridiron guessers in November, Smith correctly picked 84 games. How great is that? The guy in first place, Mark Koerner, correctly selected 77 games over the same span.

Last game: Is the Super Bowl. It kicks off at 3:30 this Sunday. Koerner has already won four free half-page ads for the local nonprofit of his choice, Coeur d’Alene Food Bank. If Steve Griffitts can tie him - go, Falcons! - Griffitts will also claim four free half-page ads for his charity, which is SURPRISE ALERT. SEE NEXT ITEM. Meantime, Blaine Bennett will tie Ryan Davis for third place if the Patriots win, which would net each of their local nonprofits one free-half page ad in The Press. Go to Page B2 and see if you can calculate all the possibilities.

Last gift: Griffitts is going to finish either in a tie for first or alone in second place (which is awarded two half-page Press ads). Either way, the Hayden mayor and Mountain West Bank VP has informed The League that he will split his winnings between his named nonprofit, Kootenai Health Foundation, and a surprise winner, Safe Passage, formerly the North Idaho Violence Prevention Center. One guy. Two charities. Three cheers!

Last week: Duffy Smock of Windermere Coeur d’Alene Realty put away his head-to-head opponent, John Beutler of Century 21 Beutler Associates. So what did Beutler do? File a formal protest with The League? Pout? Draw mustaches on Duffy’s signs? No. Here’s what Beutler shared with his fellow Pigskin Prognosticators: “After a slow start at the beginning of the season I regrouped, changed strategy and continued in the same direction with a lofty goal of not finishing last and of course outpacing Duffy.

Well, 1 out of 2. Congrats to Duffy. We had fun with it and appreciated being a part of it.” That got you a standing O, John.

Last word: (The League dispenses handkerchiefs at this point.) This is the final weekly Sports column of Pigskin Prognosticators for the 2016-17 season. Like John said, it’s been fun. Look for a wrap-up story on the front page early next week with a team photo of your heroes, the 2016-17 Coeur d’Alene Press All-Star Pigskin Prognosticators.
