Mercy killing takes center stage at Lake City High School this weekend and next.
Troupe de Wolfe, the school’s drama group, is performing “Arsenic and Old Lace,” the Joseph Kesselring comedy classic.
Produced and directed by Sandy Seaton, the show opened Thursday and performances continue at 7 p.m. today and Saturday, and again Feb. 9-11, in the Lake City High School Auditorium, 6101 Ramsey Road, Coeur d’Alene. The play, described as a clever mix of comedy, mayhem and the macabre, tells the tale of two charitable and charming elderly sisters who poison lonely old men to send them to a better place.
After serving their guests a concoction of elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine, and “just a pinch of cyanide” Abby Brewster (Ricki Ferhenbacher) and Martha Brewster (Melia Hannigan-Luther) enlist the aid of their offbeat nephew Teddy (Connor Brooks), the very embodiment of Teddy Roosevelt, to bury the bodies in the cellar.
When nephew and renowned dramatic critic Mortimer Brewster (Noah Garrett) discovers one of the victims stuffed the parlor window seat, laughter prevails as he attempts to keep his aunts’ unusual proclivity from his fiancee, Elaine (Ashley Holmes); his vengeful brother, Jonathan (Evan Schwaab) and the oblivious police (Noah Coll, Sebastian Goetz, Marisa Butler and Malachi Tran).
Other characters include the oft — inebriated Dr. Einstein of questionable surgical ability (Kyto Katori); a would-be boarder who barely escapes with his life (Holden Farrey-Messner); a minister protecting his daughter from the wiles of theater (Josh Weadick); and an unwitting sanitarium superintendent (Michel Terry).
The show’s production and design team includes Zuriah Irwin, stage manager; and her assistant, Aubrey Bernard. Emma Bolkovatz is technical director and in charge of property design. Senior Noah Garrett designed the set. Sound and light design are by Holden Farrey-Messner and Michael McGiveney respectively. The make-up and hair design team includes Anika Hille and Sarena Kaschmitter. Costume design is by the team of Samantha Moore and Anika Hille.
Tickets are $8 general admission, $7/seniors and students and $6 for LCHS ASB cardholders and can be purchased in the school office or at the door up to one hour before each performance.
Organizers strongly recommend no children under 8 attend the performance.
