Fast start, frozen finish

COEUR d’ALENE — Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said it was the best five minutes of basketball his team had played all season to open the 5A Region 1 girls basketball tournament on Friday night.
It was the last 27 that will have his team trying to regroup to keep its season alive.
Lake City turned the ball over 16 times — 13 in the second quarter — in a 52-40 loss to the Lewiston Bengals in the opening round at Lake City High.
On Tuesday, Lewiston (14-6) will play at Post Falls (18-2) in the regional title game, while Lake City (16-5) will host Coeur d’Alene (8-11) in a loser-out game. Both games start at 7 p.m. Post Falls beat Coeur d’Alene 49-30 in the other opening round game.
Lake City opened a 13-2 lead 3:21 into the game, but the T-Wolves then went cold from the floor, scoring three points in the second quarter to find themselves down 28-20 at halftime.
“We started well and it was probably the best we’ve played all year,” Kelly said. “And then they kind of tweaked their press, and we started chucking the ball all over the place. Once they got the momentum, and I give them 100 percent credit. They just outworked us. They outrebounded us and they got every loose ball. From the second quarter on, we didn’t attack. We just stood around and watched.”
Lewiston sophomore guard Kendyll Kinzer scored 25 points, 22 coming in the final three quarters.
Several area games were postponed Friday because of the snowstorm, but Lewiston thought the roads were good enough to make the trek north.
“When it was 13-2, I was thinking, ‘God dang — why didn’t we just stay home,’” Lewiston coach Dave Cornelia said. “When it was 28-20 at the half, we responded and did some nice things. Kendyll was fantastic tonight and our other kids did their things. They didn’t hit their perimeter shots, but they didn’t need to. We gave ourselves a chance to win the district tournament on Tuesday, but if things don’t go well, we could be right back here next week with another shot at these guys. Now we know we can win, and I was proud of our effort. Our rebounding was good tonight.”
Keara Simpson had 11 points and six rebounds, Nina Carlson and Lauren Rewers with 10 points each for Lake City, which beat Lewiston in both games during the regular season, including 56-42 just four days earlier to clinch the second seed in the tournament.
“I know these girls, and I expect them to come ready to go on Tuesday,” Kelly said. “We’ve got that mentality where we’ve got to play one game at a time if we want to keep playing.”
Lewiston outscored Lake City 32-11 in the second and third quarter combined.
“I think we started becoming jump shooters, and we’ve got a little bit of a size advantage on them,” Kelly said. “That’s an advantage being able to get the ball inside, and we went away from that and starting shooting 17-foot jumpers. And that’s not us. I give them credit, they outworked us and played better than us.”
Lake City beat Coeur d’Alene in both matchups this season.
“We’re done if we play like that again,” Kelly said. “We’re going to see what kind of character we have. We’ll come back and be ready to play.”
Cornelia said the trip from Lewiston was fine.
“There was some bare spots on the roads, but on the highways, you could tell they were going to get iced up,” Cornelia said. “Once we got to Coeur d’Alene, the roads were bad. But once we got here about 5 o’clock, we were able to get some shots up and said ‘we’re here to play.’”

Post Falls 49, Coeur d’Alene 30: Junior post Macky Morris was everywhere for the Trojans at The Arena.
Grabbing rebounds.
Grabbing steals.
Hitting shots.
Morris went 9 for 12 from the field, finishing with 19 points, 12 rebounds and five steals for the top-seeded Trojans against the fourth-seeded Vikings.
“She just plays with a tremendous amount of energy,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said of Morris. “She was getting steals, rebounds and she was everything for us tonight when everyone else didn’t play well. She really picked us up.”
Morris scored 12 of the team’s 15 second-quarter points.
“It wasn’t pretty the entire game,” said Allert, whose Trojans beat the Vikings by 40 points last week. “Coeur d’Alene came out and played with a lot of energy and made things chaotic for a little bit, and we got caught up in it. We kind of calmed down in the second quarter and played a lot more calm in the second half.”
Kayla Fagan scored 11 points for Coeur d’Alene.
