Rachel Afton Richardson Stubbs Williams, 97
Rachel Afton Stubbs (born Richardson and Williams after her second marriage) died at 11:43 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017. She was born Oct. 28, 1919, in Cambridge, Idaho. Her parents, Clarence Victor Richardson Sr. and Ethel Rae Robinson/Richardson, precede her in passing.
Her first husband, Ira Dean Stubbs and her second husband, Clifford Williams, also precede her in passing. Her three siblings, Clarence Victor Richardson Jr., Joyce Hansen and Shirley Hope Richardson, also preceded Rachel. Her children, Gregory Dean Stubbs, Jonathan Dean Stubbs and Jerilyn Joyce Whitaker (Stubbs); seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren survive her.
Rachel lived a long and beautiful life. After graduating from Lewiston State Normal School with a teaching credential, she moved with Ira to the San Francisco area where both worked in industry during World War II. In 1958, the Stubbs family moved to Iran where Ira worked for the International Oil Operating Companies. Rachel worked as a second-grade teacher for approximately 10 years at Tehran American School during that time. After Ira’s passing, she returned to the United States and lived in the Monterey and San Francisco Bay areas. She worked in the retail sector as an art consultant and salesperson.
Later, she moved to Washington and lived with the Scott’s as “Auntie.” She then went on to work at Gamma Phi Beta sorority at the University of Washington as the House Mother. She held that position for approximately 10 years. She left to marry Clifford Williams, a childhood sweetheart, and settled in Kellogg, Idaho. Later, after Clifford’s passing, she move to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to be near her daughter, Jerilyn Whitaker. In Coeur d’Alene, she was an active member of the Unity Church until her health prevented her from participating
Rachel will be remembered for her kind nature and positive outlook on life. During her 97 years, she touched many lives and those fortunate to enjoy her company will miss her.
A memorial service will be held this summer when it will be easier for family and friends to join in a celebration of Rachel’s life. Donations may be sent to the Unity Church of Coeur d’Alene in Rachel’s name.
