POST FALLS — The occupants in the car that collided with a train this morning in Post Falls have been identified as Post Falls High students Jacob Brockus, 17, and Mikelli Villasenor, 15.

Villasenor died, while Brockus, who was the driver, is in fair condition at Kootenai Health.

School officials said the two were headed to a school band event and to pick up another student when the crash occurred.

Post Falls police Chief Scot Haug said the westbound Union Pacific trail collided with the maroon Chevrolet passenger car that was northbound on Spokane Street around 6:05 a.m.

The collision was just south of the intersection of Spokane and Prairie Avenue and west of Prairie Falls Golf Course. The vehicle came to rest on the north side of the tracks.

There are Stop signs at the railroad crossing, but no traffic lights or automated crossing arms.

Haug said that, while are roads are icy this morning, road conditions do not appear to be a factor in the collision based on the initial investigation. There was limited daylight when the crash occurred.

A witness who was behind the car said it appeared the vehicle had stopped prior to the intersection, then proceeded ahead, Haug said.
