Rain and snow expected this week falling on top of a deep snowpack across the valleys of northwest Montana is cause for concern for homeowners, according to local weather authorities.

Following another round of accumulating snow today, Flathead and Lincoln counties could see temperatures climb above freezing tonight with possible rainfall, according to the National Weather Service. Ray Nickless, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Missoula, said the rain on top of already snow-burdened structures could lead to damage or even the collapse of flat or weakened roofs.

The potential roof damage should be considered an immediate concern, warned Nickless.

“I think it’s a good thing for people to be concerned with all the snow in the valley,” he added.

Emergency authorities in Lincoln County report that several buildings in Libby have too much snow on the roofs following Monday’s storm that dumped 3 to 5 feet of snow across the region. The weather service says an additional 1 to 2 inches of liquid could fall through Thursday night.

Joe Kingan of the American Red Cross encouraged homeowners to remove as much snow and ice as possible off roofs.

He cautioned that it could be dangerous to stand on a roof and advised hiring a professional for snow removal.

Nickless said lower elevation snow melt could become an issue as temperatures begin to rise above freezing more frequently. Clogged storm drains can cause water to pool in the streets and “create lakes.”

Other problems that can occur with rapidly melting snow include damage to homes’ foundations, electrical and heating systems, and a threat of mold, warned Kingan.

“We’re not expecting anything major, but you never know,” Kingan said. “A little bit of water can do significant damage to a home.”
