BONNERS FERRY — Penguin Plunge participants have begun seeking out financial sponsors who wish to support them as they dive into the icy cold Kootenai River in order to raise funds for the 2017 Special Olympics.

The annual fundraiser has been set for noon on March 11, with registration beginning at 10 a.m.

The 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games, which is the world’s largest sports and humanitarian event, will be held in Graz, Schladming, Ramsau, and Styria, Austria, from March 14 to 25.

Boundary County Public Information Officer Michael Meier said the Penguin Plunge is the Boundary County community’s effort to raise funds for children who wish to participate in the Special Olympics and to provide them with financial assistance that can help them be successful with their endeavor.

It’s a very good cause and a lot of fun for participants and members of the community who just want to watch,” Meier said.

This year’s participants will be encouraged by their supporters, Beach Boy’s tunes, and knowing that they can jump into a hot jacuzzi following their plunge.

“We are still in the planning stages, but we have some big plans for this year’s event,” Meier said. “We have a great turnout every year and don’t expect this year to be any different.”

Participants will be judged on costumes, people’s/judge’s choice, most donations pledged, and team spirit. Meier said judges have not yet been selected.
