SANDPOINT — Two collapsed roofs, downed power lines and minor downtown flooding were reported after an ice storm shellacked Bonner County on Thursday.

Selkirk Fire Rescue & EMS Chief Ron Stocking said two snow roofs shielding mobile homes on Walker Way in Sagle failed on Thursday. There were no injuries.

Stocking said one of the trailers was inhabited, while the other was vacant.

“It failed and the snow roof was on top the of mobile home in two cases. The four-by-four (inch) posts snapped,” Stocking said.

Firefighters provided the resident of the occupied home with some cash to get lunch and escape the weather and arrangements were being made through the Red Cross to provide lodging for the woman, Stocking said.

Stocking said there was one slip-and-fall call Thursday from somebody who fell while trying to clear snow from their roof.

“We’ve been extremely busy with hazardous condition calls,” said Stocking. “Thankfully, there hasn’t been a lot of medical aids and traffic accidents.”

Northern Lights, meanwhile, reported that 5,398 of its power customers were affected by the ice storm. By Thursday evening, 3,719 customers were without power. The most hard-hit areas were Priest Lake, Boundary County and northwestern Montana, where hundreds of customers were without power. The utility also reported scattered outages north of Sandpoint.

Avista Utilities reported a half-dozen outages in its service area on Thursday night.

Bands of hardy souls who ventured onto Schweitzer Mountain on Thursday encountered limited operations due to the weather conditions. Only two lifts were slated for operation and the mountain ceased all operations by 2 p.m., according to the resort’s snow report.

Bonner County officials reported no weather-related calamities on Thursday. Bonner County Sheriff Daryl Wheeler and Emergency Management Director Bob Howard said they were keeping close tabs on impacts of the ice storm.

“We’ve got a lot of water and that water has nowhere to go,” Howard said.

Sandpoint City Administrator Jennifer Stapleton said city crews from all available departments spent much of the day, as well as the night before, clearing snow and ice build-up from storm drains in an effort to get ahead of potential flooding. They were expected to head back out early today to continue efforts to clear the city’s storm drains.

Because of the rain and snow, Stapleton said city officials are concerned about flooding in the area and are asking residents to help clear the storm drains in front of their homes and businesses. Among the areas which experienced minor flooding is the Cedar Street Bridge, which saw some water come into the structure.

The city has sand and bags available for any residents experiencing flooding concerns to fill and take. The sand and bags are at the Sandpoint Fire Station, 1123 Lake St.

Stapleton praised Public Works Director Ryan Luttmann, Fire Chief Ron Stocking and Police Chief Corey Coon for helping the city get on top of things.

The National Weather Service in Spokane reported that Bonner County was under a flood watch until Saturday due to rain, snowmelt and ice jams, which was causing small stream flooding and localized flood issues.

Flooding problems are expected to continue today as a storm system brings significant rainfall and much warmer temperatures to the region.

Flooding problems may occur today and Friday as a storm system

“This will cause significant melting of the snow on the ground below 4000 feet and could lead to localized flooding, small stream flooding and ice jam flooding,” the flood watch said.

Stocking was not expecting things to quiet down on Thursday night.

“We’re not out of the woods yet. I think we’re in for a long night,” he said.
