Harold W. Markie, 94
Harold W. Markie passed away on Feb. 1, 2017 at the age of 94. He passed away peacefully in his home in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He was born in St. Paul, Minn., and grew up in that area until he joined the Navy. He is survived by his wife, Vonda, of 43 years; his children, Marilyn of Arcata, Calif., Harold of San Jose, Calif., John of Mesa, Ariz., and Mike of Vista, Calif.; his brother, Howard of St. Paul, Minn.; brother-in-law Richard and sister-in-law EC of San Jose, Calif. Hal joined the Navy as part of the “Avengers of Pearl Harbor” group of 300 signed in by the governor of Minnesota on the steps of the capital. He served on the Enterprise and was very proud of his ship and the men he served with. He always said his heroes were the pilots who had to fly off the ship and then return to a fly speck in the ocean.
Hal worked for Ford Aerospace many years and when he retired he wanted to live somewhere with open spaces. He loved the outdoors and especially fishing and hunting. He spent many hours with nephew, Gene Repp, hunting in the mountains around Coeur d’Alene. He loved to travel and he and his wife made many trips to the Oregon Coast, California and Arizona to see family.
In his professional career he traveled all over the world and had many great stories about his travels and the people he met.
He will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him.
