High school warns of scam

A scam claiming to sell ad space for a Whitefish High School sports poster has contacted several Whitefish businesses.

A company called Sports Media has requested payment for ad space on a WHS 2017 spring sports poster, according to Principal Kerry Drown. The company has not been authorized by the school district to conduct a fundraiser.

The scam comes in the form of a billing statement for the ad space that asks for credit card information. There is no working relationship between Sports Media and the school district.

Drown said all school fundraisers are conducted locally through cash or check transactions, and residents should be wary of any out-of-state solicitations or requests for credit card information.

If an offer ever seems like a scam, Drown asks business owners to contact the high school before submitting payment.

This isn’t the first time a scam has claimed affiliation with the school. Last fall a Texas-based company also reached out to several local businesses claiming to be fundraising for the school.

Drown and Activities Director, Aric Harris, are available for questions at 862-8600.
