The Ronan girls basketball team has gone virtually unchallenged as they prepare to head into the Western Class B District Tournament.

The Maidens (18-0) are currently a statistical double-take averaging 61.9 points per contest, shooting 43 percent from the field, grabbing 28.3 rebounds a game, 15.5 assists per game, 11.9 steals, and nearly two blocks a contest.

Capturing the District Tournament crown was almost a foregone conclusion until recently when the Maidens were barely able to power through a 61-60 victory over Florence-Carlton on Feb. 9.

In a recent interview, Maidens Coach Ron Hanson mentioned he felt his team hadn’t reached its peak.

“We still haven’t come close to playing to our potential and there is a lot of room for improvement,” Hanson said. “We’ve improved in huge leaps and still may not be where we want to be at the end of the season.”

Ronan won its first contest against Florence in a 52-40 home victory.

Florence, the No. 2 seed in Districts, has a record that is deceiving considering the quality of opponents they have lost to including Frenchtown and Ronan. They will go into the District tournament as the No. 2 seeded team and await the winner of Mission and Deer Lodge in the first round.

Mission is still a team in search of its first victory with first-year head coach Jen Brander.
